SweetTree is proud sponsor of Headway’s Carer of The Year Award

SweetTree is proud to sponsor the Carer of the Year Award at brain injury charity Headway’s 2016 12 National Heroes Awards this year.

The winners were announced in London on Friday 16th December 2016 by double Olympic Gold Medallist James Cracknell and included awards for Carer, Volunteer and Alex Richardson Achiever of the Year, along with The Stephen McAleese for Outstanding Contribution to Headway Award. The aim of the awards is to recognise the outstanding achievements and contributions individuals and have made to the charity on a local and national level.

The winner of the SweetTree-sponsored Carer of the Year Award was Heather Beaumont, a 55-year-old carer from Ballymena who has cared for her husband Gary since he suffered a brain injury three years ago that left him wheelchair-bound and unable to communicate.

The couple met nearly 30 years ago at a gym and had been enjoying a weekend in London when Gary suffered a near-fatal brain injury in his sleep. For almost a year, Heather was told he may not survive and even if he pulled through, he would have long-term cognitive impairment. The pair now communicate through eye contact and Gary has made slow but notable improvements. Heather visits her husband in hospital every day, working tirelessly to adapt their house so that he can return home eventually and even completing training courses to take a hands-on approach when delivering Gary’s care as his ‘voice’ and advocate.
