What is Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s is a progressive, neurological brain disorder that negatively affects movement and sometimes mental health as well. What causes it is the death or damage of the nerve cells in the brain that produce dopamine, the chemical responsible for coordination and movement.

The most common symptoms include shaking in the hands, arms, legs, or face, stiffness, slow movement, problems with balance and coordination, increased difficulty with speech, memory loss, and sometimes, changes in behaviour or mental health.

The cause of Parkinson’s remains unknown, but it is commonly agreed that genetics and environmental factors play a role in the progression of the disease. Despite no known cure, medication, therapies, some changes in lifestyle, and, most importantly, proper care can significantly improve the condition.

If you or a loved one requires compassionate care for Parkinson’s disease, please don’t hesitate to book a consultation with our team so we can find the right solution for you.

‘I can highly recommend Sweet Tree Care Services. The management is excellent – thorough, professional, competent, responsive, and always willing to assist. The carers they have provided for my parents have been kind and sensitive, and always reliable. They turn up when they say they will, communicate well with my parents, and have a careful balance of friendly but respectful. As a family, we feel very relieved to have SweetTree both as carers now but also in the future when my parents will need even more care.’

FAQs

Parkinson’s Disease FAQs

It is widely acknowledged that changes in lifestyle can improve the quality of life and slow down the progression of the disorder. Regular exercising is proven to improve mobility and strength and fight mobility issues. Diet also plays an important part, with foods rich in antioxidants and fibre being strongly recommended by professionals. A general, well-thought-out routine and the introduction of adaptive tools can also make the disease more manageable.

Unfortunately, lifestyle cannot cure Parkinson’s, but good habits work well together with medical treatments and therapies to strengthen the individual’s physique and mental health.

The risk of Parkinson’s increases with age. Generally, it is at the age of 50 that the first symptoms may occur. On average, the onset of the disease affects those in their 70s. Men are more likely to develop it.

As the disease progresses, the need for full-time care for individuals increases. Apart from assistance with daily activities that become more difficult to manage, personalised care also helps manage medication administration and build healthy routines. Parkinson’s can also raise the sense of isolation and increase the risk of depression. Caregivers fight the risk by providing much-needed companionship and understanding in the comfort of the individual’s home. These are essential to maintain comfort and dignity.

In-home care is really about creating a safe and supportive environment for the individual so they can experience life in the best way possible.

Absolutely! Symptoms of Parkinson’s vary from person to person, so establishing the best possible tailored care for your loved one is at the core of what we do and believe in. We will take the time to get to know the client, their symptoms and their needs before we come up with the right care plan.

Yes, and we strongly encourage it so that the individual gets the best possible care and support throughout their life with Parkinson’s.
