What is Motor Neurone Disease?

Motor neurone disease (MND) is a progressive neurological condition that affects the nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscles. Eventually, the disease leads to the death of these cells, causing muscle weakness, loss of coordination, and paralysis.

The condition most commonly begins with symptoms such as muscle weakness or twitching in one area of the body. As MND progresses, the person may experience difficulty walking, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, and sometimes even breathing problems.

Unfortunately, the exact cause of MND is not completely understood. Although there is currently no cure for the condition, the right personalised motor neurone disease care at home can provide a supportive environment that significantly improves the quality of life for your loved one.

‘I can highly recommend Sweet Tree Care Services. The management is excellent – thorough, professional, competent, responsive, and always willing to assist. The carers they have provided for my parents have been kind and sensitive, and always reliable. They turn up when they say they will, communicate well with my parents, and have a careful balance of friendly but respectful. As a family, we feel very relieved to have SweetTree both as carers now but also in the future when my parents will need even more care.’

FAQs

Motor Neurone Disease FAQs

Offering emotional support is one of the most important things you can do for them. You and a qualified team can assist with daily tasks and encourage physical therapy. What will be very appreciated is to adapt the home environment to meet the needs of your loved one.

Physiotherapy is the best way. Mobility aids like braces and wheelchairs can also be introduced as the disease progresses. It is also important for the individual to learn adaptive techniques as well, to maintain their independence.

Anxiety and depression are very common in MND. We strongly advise making sure you and your loved one get the right psychological support or counselling. Peer support groups can also be highly beneficial.
